According to Consumer Research magazine, a recent
Mystery Shopping study has uncovered discrimination in U.S. banks against entrepreneurs from minority groups.

Three U.S. business school professors hired mystery shoppers of different race and social status: white Americans, African-Americans, and Hispanics. Then the informally dressed mystery shoppers came to banks to ask about lending opportunities for small businesses.

The experiment revealed that white business owners get better service and more promising chances for a loan than minorities. Bank employees gave more detailed information to white clients about lending opportunities and offered their help in filling in the application form. The employees asked more questions to African-Americans about their personal finances and rarely offered their business cards to African- and Latin American entrepreneurs.
